How To Prevent Your Dog From Eating Poop

If you find that your dog eats poop, it may be a sign of a larger problem. Your dog may eat poop for a number of reasons, but if the habit doesn’t get fixed, it could lead to health issues or worse. There’s even a veterinary name for it: coprophagia.

Why do dogs eat poop, and how can you correct your dog of this nasty habit? We’ll provide the answers and more helpful information below.

Why Do Dogs Eat Poop?

Your dog may eat poop for a few different reasons, including:

Although this isn’t an extensive list, if you find that your dog’s poop-eating habit is becoming a problem, we recommend you speak with your veterinarian to come up with a solution.

Feces from other animals can contain harmful bacteria, viruses, or parasites that can cause health problems for your dog. Prevention is key to your dog’s overall health.

How to Stop Your Dog From Eating Poop

There are two ways we recommend preventing your dog from eating poop: training and supplementation. One solution might work, but both options can greatly improve your dog’s health and its life.

Training

Training your dog to not eat poop can require patience and persistence, but will be beneficial for you and your dog in the long run. Train your dog to avoid feces with their favorite treat and offer other ways to grab your dog’s attention, such as with toys and exercise.

There are three elements to training your dog to not eat poop:

  1. Supervision when they are in a yard where there could be poop on the ground.

  2. A solid “leave it” command.

  3. Reward and praise for the leave it.

It’s critical to consistently supervise your dog until this habit is broken, otherwise, they won’t learn to stop. It’s also important to offer a reward and praise for your dog. As unappealing as it seems to us, poop eating is a reward of sorts for your dog. So you’ll need to train a “leave it” command and then replace the poop reward with one that’s actually healthy. We recommend high-value treats such as these to ensure the reward you offer is a really, really good one compared to the poop.

Supplementation

If your dog eats poop due to a nutrient deficiency, we recommend improving their diet with more nutritious food or with supplements.
